Founded in 1565, Saint Augustine, Florida, is the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the United States. With its historic buildings, stunning beaches, and rich cultural experiences, this city offers something for every traveler. Discover in this guide the must-see activities and attractions for your visit.
A Brief History of Saint Augustine
Saint Augustine is often recognized as the first place where Europeans set foot on the North American continent. This occurred in 1513 during the exploration of the Florida peninsula by Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León. In the previous century, Christopher Columbus and John Cabot had limited themselves to exploring islands, but did not land on the continent itself.
The city's founding dates to the arrival of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565. He established a strategic base to protect the route of Spanish galleons transporting riches between the Americas and Spain.
At that time, French presence in Florida posed a threat to Spain. Fort Caroline, a Huguenot outpost established in 1564 near present-day Jacksonville, was attacked and destroyed by Menéndez de Avilés in September 1565. This victory allowed the Spanish to consolidate their control over the region.
Saint Augustine remained under Spanish rule for nearly two centuries before being ceded to the British in 1763, following the Treaty of Paris that ended the Seven Years' War. In exchange, Spain recovered Havana. Under British control, the city became a military stronghold, particularly with reinforced fortifications along the Matanzas River to defend the Atlantic coast.
In 1783, after the American Revolution, Florida returned to Spanish sovereignty, before finally being ceded to the United States in 1821.
