The history of Carmel-by-the-Sea dates back to 1602, when Spanish explorer Sebastián Vizcaíno named the Rio Carmelo river in honor of the Carmelite friars. In 1771, Father Junípero Serra founded the Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo here, which later became an important cultural center.
Carmel-by-the-Sea began attracting artists, writers, and intellectuals from the early twentieth century onward, forging its identity as a bohemian refuge. If you prefer public transportation, there is no direct connection. You can combine the Caltrain to San Jose, then an Amtrak train to Salinas, followed by bus line 20 to Carmel, which takes approximately 4.5 to 5.5 hours total. A shuttle from SFO airport via Monterey is also possible, though longer.
