Wailua Falls
Wailua Falls
Double waterfall of approximately 26 meters north of Lihue, on Kauai. Famous for the Fantasy Island opening sequence, accessible from a roadside viewpoint.
The Wailua Falls form a double waterfall of approximately 26 meters (80 feet according to some sources) located a few kilometers north of Lihue, on the island of Kauai, in Hawaiʻi. The site is accessible directly from a roadside viewpoint, making it one of the easiest waterfalls to observe in the archipelago.
Why visit Wailua Falls
Three elements make this site worth a stop on Kauai's east coast itinerary:
- Immediate access: free parking facing the viewpoint, no hiking required.
- Cultural fame: the falls were made famous by the opening credits of the TV series Fantasy Island, which aired in the late 1970s.
- Double waterfall configuration: depending on the flow of the Wailua River, the water curtain divides into two, sometimes three distinct cascades, giving the site a recognizable silhouette.
The viewpoint is ideal for a brief stop (15 to 30 minutes) before moving on to other points of interest in the region.
History and cultural significance
A site linked to Hawaiian nobility
The Wailua River valley is one of the most historically rich areas of Kauai. It contains the remains of Huea temple (heiau) as well as sacred stones marking the birthplace of Hawaiian tribal chiefs, the ali'i. The river was considered a sacred axis connecting the coast to the inland mountains.
The legend of warriors
Oral tradition recounts a rite of passage for young Hawaiian warriors, who would plunge from the top of the falls to demonstrate their courage. This episode is more rooted in local folklore than documented historical fact, but it illustrates the place of the falls in the island's imagination.
What to see on site and nearby
The main viewpoint
The developed viewpoint at the end of the road overlooks the two cascades of the waterfall. Morning light illuminates the water curtain head-on and regularly creates small rainbows in the mist.
Other waterfalls on Kauai
If you extend your exploration of the island's waterfalls:
- Opaekaa Falls (approximately 46 meters) on the east bank, accessible from a viewpoint along Kuamoo Road.
- Hanakapiai Falls (approximately 90 meters), reached after 3 km of hiking on the Kalalau Trail, on the Na Pali coast.
- Manawaiopuna Falls (approximately 120 meters), glimpsed in Jurassic Park, accessible only by helicopter.
Practical information and safety
Important safety warning
Swimming at the base of the falls is officially discouraged by local authorities: unpredictable currents, falling rocks, and risk of serious injury. The trail descending to the pool is not an official trail: it is steep, slippery, and Hawaiian red soil becomes particularly treacherous after heavy showers. Stay at the secure viewpoint.
On site
- Free access, no admission fee.
- Parking with limited capacity, which fills up midday.
- No facilities or food service at the viewpoint: bring water.
- Allow 15 to 30 minutes for photos, longer if combined with other sites in the valley.
When to go
Kauai experiences two distinct seasons:
- Dry season (May to October): more stable conditions, more accessible trails, moderate flow but favorable light for photography.
- Rainy season (November to April): more powerful flow and more spectacular waterfalls, but increased risks of sudden flooding upstream and slippery access.
The quietest time is early morning, before tour buses and organized excursions arrive.
How to get there
The site is located at the end of Maalo Road (Highway 583), which departs from Lihue and ends at the viewpoint parking lot, approximately 6 km away. Allow 10 to 15 minutes by car from Lihue Airport. The "Wailua Falls" signage is clear from Kuhio Highway.
An alternative is to reach the area by kayaking on the Wailua River from the mouth: these excursions are often combined with a visit to Fern Grotto, but they do not take you directly to the base of the falls.
Nearby
To extend your discovery of Kauai and Hawaiʻi:
- Manoa Falls, on the island of Oahu, another iconic waterfall in the archipelago.
- Canyonlands National Park, for a contrast with Utah's desert landscapes.
- Bryce Canyon National Park, another major stop in the American West.
