The Big Texan Steak Ranch, a legendary steakhouse

The Big Texan Steak Ranch is located in Amarillo, in the State of Texas. It opened its doors in 1960 and quickly became a benchmark steakhouse across the United States.

What makes it famous? Its 72 oz steak challenge, which must be consumed in less than one hour. The meal is free if you complete the challenge. If you don't, the restaurant keeps the $72 fee required to participate.

With its rustic décor and servers in western attire, the Big Texan Steak Ranch is also known for its atmosphere that recalls the era of cowboys. From the moment you enter, you'll be greeted by an impressive sign and a distinctly Texan façade. Inside, the atmosphere is welcoming, with large wooden tables, cattle heads mounted on the walls, and a stage where live country musicians often perform.

Added to this is the quality of its steaks. The meats are carefully selected and cooked to perfection over an open grill, guaranteeing intense flavor and exceptional tenderness. If you're looking for an authentic Texas steak, this is the place!

The challenge and its rules

The Steak Challenge was born in 1960, when the restaurant's founder, Bob Lee, decided to organize a contest to see which of his cowboys could eat the most steaks in one hour.

A hungry cowboy managed to devour 72 oz of steak, a shrimp cocktail, a baked potato, a roll, and a salad, and won a prize of $5. Impressed, Lee decided to offer a free meal to anyone who could repeat this feat. Today, this legendary challenge attracts food challenge enthusiasts from around the world.

People who wish to attempt the 72 oz steak challenge must first sign a waiver explaining the rules. They pay for the meal in advance and, if they succeed in finishing the steak, they get their money back.

The steak is prepared according to the participant's preferred doneness, and the challenge takes place around a table seating six people, located on an elevated platform in the center of the dining room.

Before beginning, participants can taste a piece of the steak to verify its cooking. The table is filmed continuously and the video is broadcast on the restaurant's website.

Approximately 90,000 people have attempted the challenge since the restaurant opened, but only 10% of participants have succeeded. Winners see their names inscribed on the wall of fame, and some of them even become local legends!
