This major port, with a geographical profile reminiscent of a large island, is dotted with hills and small mountains—a feature that earned it the nickname "city of seven hills." This metropolitan area is renowned for its vibrant culinary scene, eclectic neighborhoods, and spectacular coastline. Seattle sits between Lake Washington to the east and Puget Sound to the west, making it an unmissable destination.

History of Seattle: From First Inhabitants to Modern City

Seattle has been inhabited for approximately 8,000 years, as evidenced by archaeological excavations at sites such as West Point and Magnolia. Before the arrival of European settlers, the region was occupied by the Duwamish tribe, living in several villages along neighboring bays and lakes.

On November 13, 1851, the Denny party, composed of European settlers, arrived at Alki Point, which they initially named "New York" before renaming it Alki. In April 1852, they relocated to Elliott Bay. The city was officially named Seattle in honor of Chief Sealth of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes. It achieved city status in 1856, temporarily lost it, and regained it in 1859.

Today

Since Boeing relocated its headquarters to Chicago in 2001, giants like Microsoft, Starbucks, Amazon, and Google have strengthened their presence in Seattle, boosting the economy and population growth. Known for its spirit of innovation, Seattle has realized ambitious projects, such as the creation of the artificial Duwamish Island and the development of urban parks like Freeway Park. The city continues to evolve with recent initiatives such as the construction of a new public library and the transformation of the central waterfront. Today, Seattle distinguishes itself through its cultural institutions, green spaces, and natural setting, while facing challenges such as income inequality, affordable housing shortages, racism, and climate change, which have sparked calls for change.
