History
Monterey is the ancestral territory of the Rumsen, an indigenous people of California. In 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the first European navigator to reach the Pacific coast of the États-Unis, arrived in the bay and named it La Bahia de los Pinos. In 1602, explorer Sebastian Vizcaino renamed the locality Monte Rey Bay, which was later shortened to Monterey. On July 7, 1846, during the Mexican-American War, the American flag was raised above Monterey's customs house, marking California's integration into the États-Unis.
Monterey in Culture
Black-and-white photographer Ansel Adams captured the landscapes of Monterey. The town inspired celebrated writers John Steinbeck and Henry Miller. In the music world, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin delivered iconic performances at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. More recently, Monterey served as the filming location for HBO's acclaimed drama series Big Little Lies.
