Local Life

Exclusive residential neighborhood in west Los Angeles, Bel Air is part of the Platinum Triangle alongside Beverly Hills and Holmby Hills.

Bel Air is one of Los Angeles' most exclusive residential neighborhoods. Located west of the city, between Brentwood and Beverly Hills, it comprises winding streets, vast properties hidden behind hedges and monumental gates. Without shops or conventional attractions, the neighborhood is best explored by car to capture the hushed atmosphere of the Platinum Triangle.

Why visit Bel Air

Bel Air is not a tourist destination in the conventional sense: there are no museums, shopping streets, or monuments to visit. The neighborhood's appeal lies in its upscale residential character, verdant urban design, and association with Hollywood. Curious visitors come here to understand a certain vision of Californian luxury: expansive properties, varied architecture (Mediterranean, modern, colonial), and hills planted with eucalyptus and palms. A stop at Hotel Bel-Air rounds out the visit, and proximity to the Getty Center or Beverly Hills allows you to incorporate the detour into a broader itinerary.

A history born in 1923

The neighborhood was founded in 1923 by Alphonzo Edward Bell, a California oil entrepreneur. Bell purchased vast hillside land in west Los Angeles with the idea of developing a high-end residential community. He chose the name "Bel Air" in reference to his European origins, to give the place a prestigious image.

From the outset, development followed strict codes: winding streets, large plots, architectural restrictions, and prohibition of commercial activity. These rules, still visible today, explain the near-total absence of shops or restaurants within the perimeter.

Over the decades, Bel Air attracted industrialists, producers, and Hollywood figures. Together with Beverly Hills and Holmby Hills, it forms the "Platinum Triangle," three adjoining neighborhoods long considered California's most exclusive.

Two landmark fires

Bel Air has been struck by two major fires. The 1961 fire destroyed 484 homes and left a lasting mark on local awareness of fire risk. On December 6, 2017, the Skirball Fire, which according to investigators' findings originated from a homeless encampment, affected the neighborhood and resulted in the loss of six homes.

What to see and do

The villas, glimpsed from the street

Bel Air's properties are more sensed than seen. Tall walls, massive gates, and dense vegetation allow only glimpses of a few rooflines, pergolas, or planted driveways. The most representative streets are Bel Air Road, Stone Canyon Road, and Roscomare Road.

A neighborhood associated with Hollywood

Many celebrities have been associated with Bel Air, as current or former residents: Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Jennifer Aniston, The Weeknd, producer Quincy Jones, and Elon Musk and Kim Kardashian. Elizabeth Taylor, who passed away in 2011, lived here for many years. Residences change frequently and no tours of the properties are available.

Hotel Bel-Air

Hotel Bel-Air, nestled on Stone Canyon Road, is one of the few places in the neighborhood open to the public. You can enjoy lunch, afternoon tea, a drink at the bar, or spend the night. The garden with its pond and swans offers a pleasant respite, provided you accept premium pricing.

A few viewpoints

Certain elevated sections, particularly around Bel Air Road, offer perspectives over the surrounding hills and the Los Angeles basin, especially at day's end.

How to get there

Bel Air is located west of Los Angeles, between Brentwood and Beverly Hills, north of Sunset Boulevard. From Hollywood or Santa Monica, allow 20 to 30 minutes by car depending on traffic, via Sunset Boulevard or I-405.

By car

This is the recommended option. Renting a car allows you to explore the neighborhood's iconic streets at your own pace and combine Bel Air with Beverly Hills, the Getty Center, or Mulholland Drive.

On foot

Not well-suited: the neighborhood is vast, hilly, without public transportation, and many sections lack sidewalks.

By private guided tour

Several local agencies offer bespoke celebrity homes tours, often paired with Beverly Hills and Holmby Hills.

What to know

  • Discretion expected: Bel Air is a private residential neighborhood, with numerous "No Trespassing" signs. Stay on public streets and avoid the immediate vicinity of gates.
  • No shops: plan your coffee breaks or meals outside, for example in Brentwood, Westwood, or Beverly Hills.
  • Allow 1 to 2 hours for a driving loop, longer if you include a meal at Hotel Bel-Air.
  • Prices: visiting the neighborhood is free; Hotel Bel-Air charges premium prices, so plan accordingly.

Nearby

Bel Air is part of an area rich in interesting sites. To the southwest, the Getty Center offers panoramic views and an art collection accessible free of charge (paid parking). To the east, Beverly Hills and its Rodeo Drive naturally extend the visit. Further south, Westwood is home to the UCLA campus, and Brentwood lines with restaurants and shops.
